I did have to update the password associated with the authentication. The only recent change that I can think of is a password re-set for the Gmail POP account. Now that our outgoing server has been added, we can set this mail account to use it.

Three other email accounts also configured in Mail are working perfectly. Both the incoming and outgoing servers will need to verify your full email address and password to work correctly so be sure you enable authentication on. Check to make sure you have the correct SMTP server selected at the top. Next to 'Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP):' click on the drop-down menu and go to 'Edit SMTP Server List'. Nothing I've done so far has prevented Mail from dropping the password authentication for one account and forgetting the default server for another. From the 'Mail' menu, choose 'Preferences.' I go through this sequence several times a day now. When I open the SMTP server settings for that account, the authentication has mysteriously changed to "none." Everything connects, sends, and receives when the authentication is set to "password." After a few hours pass, however, when I try to send email from that account, I get an error message. Most ISP's tend to block port 25, so we recommend you use 587.For about a week now, Mail has picked up the maddening habit of dropping the password authentication from the SMTP settings for a gmail POP account.
